My dad and mom were in need of assistance with a variety of challenges facing them recently. To make things more difficult, I live on the opposite end of the country from my folks. Thankfully my father’s financial advisor works with a group of people dedicated to helping seniors and their families overcome such challenges. The Richmond, Virginia Senior Resource Group proved to be an awesome source of support for our family.
My mom has been suffering from dementia and my dad has been her caregiver for quite some time. He finally got to the point where the stress of taking care of her was impacting his health. So my siblings and I convinced them to move to an assisted living community. To do this, we had to find a place that my parents and siblings that they were comfortable with and was within their financial means. This also required us to sell their house downsize their belongings and get them moved to their new home. This meant we needed five types of professionals, financial, someone to help us choose the right place, a realtor, moving specialists, and legal counsel.
Imagine how difficult it would be for us to find and screen all of these professions. Not only does the RVA Senior Resource Group have all of these members and more but they have also worked together for years. My father’s advisor collected the necessary team members and as a team, they were not only able to handle the variety of tasks required, but did it with the utmost service and professionalism. We cannot stress how pleased we are with the efforts of these individuals. If you have a need for yourself or loved ones regarding the challenges that face seniors this group is the place to start.

Recently at the Episcopal of the Epiphany an evening seminar was offered by the Richmond Senior Resource Group whose purpose it is to reach out to people who are concerned about protecting their families from the devastating effects of disability and death. Melanie Lee, an attorney specializing in elder law and who provides education to the public about estate planning gave an excellent presentation covering the many facets relating to the need we all have to be certain our wills are up to date.
Her presentation was an eye opener to many if not all of us. While Melanie Lee offers her legal services to those who many wish to seek her counsel, there was no pressure other than that of her recommendation that all of us make we are prepared with up to date estate planning from whatever source we select. Without such plans in place, our families can face difficult time.
This was an excellent program providing a wealth of information, a must for all at whatever age we might be yet especially was we reach our senior years.

Our church has a fairly new ministry for folks who are caring for their aging loved ones. Given the burden these people already carry, I am very protective of them. Their time is valuable, so I want the information we provide to be relevant and practical. And they are inundated with regulations and forms, so I do not want to subject them to one more sales pitch. This is important to understand especially when bringing in outside speakers to share information with this group.
Recently, Mark Sheet, the owner of Comfort Keepers, came to speak to our Caregivers' Fellowship. He spoke about the emotional impact and decisions involved in placing a loved one in a skilled care facility. He also shared a little about the services provided by Comfort Keepers that enable senior adults to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. Our group immediately connected with Mark as he brought valuable information about services and products they can use to enhance the quality of life and independence of their loved ones. One particularly helpful resource is the SR Alliance of Greater Richmond. This is a network of experts that can provide services and topical discussions related to elder care. The one page directory Mark provided will save perhaps hours of research and wondering as our group seeks professionals who can meet their various needs.
I was so pleased by Mark's presentation, not just for the wealth of his knowledge, which is expansive, but also for the way in which he presented it. Mark genuinely cares for people - both the elderly and those who care for them. He is warm and engaging and able to cover a broad range of topics in a way that is easily received. Yes, he did talk about his business, but it did not come across as a pitch. I know our group greatly benefited from his time with us. He left us informed, equipped, and better able to meet the many needs of the ones we are called to serve. We look forward to having Mark come to our group again in the near future.
Sincerely,

I am the Director of West End Assembly of God’s Congregational Care Department. Of the many requests for resources that I get from our church body, a significant number involve dealing with aging parents. We are a 2000+ member church with a large segment of “boomers” who’s parents can no longer properly care for themselves, but are resistant to seeking assistance.
Mark Sheets of Comfort Keepers has been a wonderful resource for me when confronted with a variety of questions about, “what to do”. As a member of the Senior Alliance of Greater Richmond, Mark maintains professional contacts with other experts in the issues facing the elderly.
Mark is currently conducting a series of ElderCare presentations in our church and the response has been excellent! My original plan was to have a presentation per quarter, but after the first presentation, people don’t want to wait that long. I can’t imagine that our church is much different from yours and you are also receiving questions and pleas for help. I strongly encourage you to start your own schedule of ElderCare Seminars. Your congregation will be grateful.

Our son James, 1st day of school at Rivermount School for Autism in Dinwiddie, VA and there was no transportation available through our county school district. Thank God for TNT. I Googled "transportation services and CPR trained driver" and TNT was my contact. The man I spoke with was unbelievably helpful and contacted our Director of Special Education immediately. In 2-3 days we had a driver for James named Jim. He showed up promptly, dressed very professional and polite. I instantly felt comfortable with trusting him driving my son to and from school daily. We live in Mechanicsville and Dinwiddie is just about 1 hour drive each way. Jim fell in love with James and used to talk with him about his daily events at school. We couldn't be more pleased. I would highly recommend TNT for anyone needing any transportation or limousine services
